Known as both The Magic City and The Capital of Latin America, Miami is one of South Florida's most vibrant destinations. Whether your family likes to hit the beach, visit cultural attractions, or explore outdoor spots, you'll find something to love in Miami.
From gardens to museums to marvels you won't find anywhere else, Miami is a treasure trove of family-friendly attractions. Put some of the most popular spots at the top of your list.
Start your Miami trip at Museum Park, a 30-acre public park in the heart of the city's downtown area. Walk along the waterfront promenade, join in one of the many events and festivals that happen here, visit the contemporary art-focused Perez Art Museum Miami, or catch a Miami Heat game at the American Airlines Arena.
Make your way to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, which hosts beautiful Italian Renaissance Gardens, a historic village, and a Mediterranean Revival estate. Whether you feel like cooling off with an indoor tour or running around in the outdoor gardens, there's plenty to do and see here.
Miami is home to numerous gardens, and the 83-acre Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is considered one of the best. See orchids, spot butterflies and hummingbirds, or stroll along the peaceful garden paths. Check the schedule ahead of time to learn about classes and events geared toward kids.
When you want to cool off but don't want to go to the beach, the Venetian Pool is a must. This historic spot dates back to the 1920s, and today this pool still has freshwater swimming surrounded by tropical foliage and Italian architecture.
If this isn't your first trip to the Magic City, you might be ready for something a little different this time around. Hit the road and get out of the city with these four fun day trips near Miami.
It might be just 15 minutes from downtown Miami, but Key Biscayne feels like a million miles away from the city. It's also home to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, where you'll find beautiful beaches, a historic lighthouse, and even shoreline fishing. Bring a picnic, soak up some sunshine, and enjoy this island paradise.
About an hour north of Miami, West Palm Beach is home to some of the most majestic mansions and beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Coast. Tour some of the turn-of-the-century resorts, hit the beaches, or shop till you drop.
Just an hour southwest of Miami is Everglades National Park, a wilderness area like no other. Go hiking and biking, boating and fishing, or join a ranger-led tour to see some of the most unique areas of this expansive landscape.
Key West is a little outside of typical day trip range, but it's worth either a long day or an overnight trip. Located at the end of the Florida Keys, this laid-back destination is perfect for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. If you're short on time, visit your choice of state parks and beaches along the Florida Keys.
Getting to and around Miami is easy, no matter where your trip starts. Whether you're flying in from across the country and renting a car or driving over from elsewhere in Florida, you'll have no trouble finding your way.
Planning to fly into Miami from across the country? Book tickets to Miami International Airport, which is just 15 minutes northwest of Miami, or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is about 30 minutes north of the city. To see a little more of Florida, fly into Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, and drive two hours east to Miami.
While you can get to some major attractions by Metrobus or Metrorail, driving is the best way to navigate Miami. Keep in mind that free parking is tough to find both in the city and along Miami Beach, so be prepared to pay a few dollars per hour. Many garages and street parking areas allow you to book a spot in advance for a hassle-free trip anywhere in the city. If you're planning to hit the highway, make sure your rental car has a SunPass transponder to pay tolls quickly.
With so many family-friendly attractions and day trips throughout the area, it's no wonder that Miami is a popular destination for travelers of all kinds. Put the Magic City at the top of your bucket list, and start planning your trip to this Florida gem!
