Are you thinking about taking a trip to Denver? The Mile-High City is a great place to visit whether you're addicted to outdoor recreation or you want to spend your time indoors. Before you finalize your plans for your vacation, take time to familiarize yourself with the city and its endless possibilities for family recreation.
Where should you take your family while you're in Denver? Check out a few suggestions for entertainment in this great city.
If you visit during spring or summer, go to Coors Field to take in a professional baseball game. One of the best things about watching the Colorado Rockies play is that, because the stadium is at such a high elevation, baseballs tend to travel farther. Your chances of seeing a super-long-distance homerun are better than at other ballparks across the nation. There are also some great restaurants near the stadium, so you and your family can fill up on a hearty meal before you watch the game.
You can't miss the 16th Street Mall, which isn't what you may think of first when you bring malls to mind: This is a mile-long pedestrian promenade. If you don't feel like walking, hop on and off the free shuttle bus that makes it easy to save your energy for exploring all the shops along the mall. There are 42 outdoor cafes, so bring your appetite. Also be sure to check out the D&F Tower, which is a partial replica of the Campanile of St. Marks in Venice. When the tower was first built in 1909, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.
Want a thrill? Check out Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park, where you'll find the Half Pipe, the only ride of its kind in the United States. It sends you racing up and down a huge half pipe at 60mph. Also take a ride on the Mind Eraser, a suspension coaster that carries you along at speeds over 60mph.
Be sure to spend some time at Denver Union Station, a historic landmark. This beautiful building has some fantastic places to eat and shop. During the summer, head there to score fresh produce at the farmer's market.
Within the Denver city limits, there are more than 200 parks that include over 85 miles of bike trails. Surely, there is plenty to explore within the city, but you would be missing out if you didn't hop in your rental car to explore the beautiful areas outside of Denver, too.
If you want to try your hand at winter sports, you'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to skiing and snowboarding destinations around the Mile-High City. Only a 50-minute drive from downtown, you'll find Loveland Ski Area. Lift tickets here are affordable, and you'll have easy access to ski lessons and yummy food. There is also a convenient place to rent your ski equipment. There are runs for all levels of skiers. Another perk is that this area usually opens earlier in the season and stays open later than some of the ski resorts around the area.
Rocky Mountain National Park is about an hour and a half's drive away from Denver. Anyone who loves the outdoors will never want to leave the park. Feast your eyes on towering mountains, breathtaking meadows, placid lakes, and powerful waterfalls. Bear Lake is a popular spot within the park. It has a paved trail all the way around it, making it an ideal destination if you have young children with you.
If you're feeling up to a longer drive, make the five-hour trip to Dinosaur National Monument. The area is home to a dense concentration of prehistoric fossils. You'll even get to see a rare infant stegosaurus fossil. At the visitor center, you can watch as workers uncover the past.
Want to take a look at one of Colorado's most upscale ski towns? Vail is full of posh resorts and great shopping. Plus, it has the tallest ski mountain in North America. For an unforgettable view of the Rocky Mountains, take the Eagle-Bahn gondola ride. Vail is less than two hours away from Denver.
Before you pack up and head to Denver for your vacation, there are a few basic things about the city that you should know.
Denver has roughly 650,000 people living in it, and although it may not be as large a city as New York or Los Angeles, it is still big enough to have some issues with traffic. Rush hour is 4-6pm on weekdays generally has the most congestion, so try to plan your activities around that period. Also, if you're traveling during the cold season, be sure to brush up on safe winter weather driving techniques so you aren't caught unawares by snow and ice on the roads.
There are several neighborhoods in Denver where you might consider staying. Downtown is well-located and has a hip vibe. Cherry Creek is close to downtown, and it has some of the best shopping and dining spots in the city. The Capitol Hill area is beautiful, and it is always fun to visit the capitol building, where one of the steps has an official "mile high" marker. Some of the city's best museums are also nearby. East Colfax, Five Points, and Highlands are all also good choices when you're searching for a hotel. Perform further research to find an area that is perfect for your family.
The best time to visit Denver depends on your personal tastes. If you want to experience some of the best skiing in the nation, come in the winter. If you would rather go hiking or see the Rockies dominate at the ballpark, come in spring or summer. You may also want to plan your trip around some of the exciting events that take place in Denver.
Denver is an amazing city whether you want to shred some powder, check out a cool museum, or just take in a beautiful view.
