Dallas is within reasonable driving distance from several exciting Texan destinations. If you're interested in a more rural escape, head to Fredericksburg about four hours and 15 minutes away. The main highlight of Fredericksburg is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, which features breathtaking scenery, majestic rock formations, and almost 11 miles of hiking trails. You can easily fill an entire day here. If you're in town for a long weekend, include the Fredericksburg Nature Center and historic Fort Martin Scott in your visit as well.

Just three hours away, Austin is an excellent choice if you're looking for a day trip filled with museums. Austin is home to the Mexic-Arte Museum, Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, Blanton Museum of Art, Bullock Texas State History Museum, and Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. If you're itching to get outside after a few hours of immersive indoor exhibits, visit the 31-acre Zilker Botanical Garden. McKinney Falls State Park is another prime pick for nature lovers in Austin. Here, you'll find almost nine miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Though Dallas and Fort Worth are grouped together in airport terminology, there's nearly an hour of driving distance between the two, and that's assuming the traffic is decent. Don't miss the opportunity to spend a day exploring Fort Worth if you make it to Dallas. The two cities have very different vibes, and the Fort Worth landscape is overflowing with things to do.

The Fort Worth Stockyards are a prime place to shop, dine, and play. You can belly up to a saloon-style bar, watch as longhorns are herded down the street, and sample an outstanding range of local specialties. Children will swoon over the Fort Worth Zoo's collection of 7,000 animals. Additionally, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden covers 110-acres with 22 specialized gardens.

Dallas can seem like an overwhelming destination if you're not well prepared for your visit. The city is comprised of nine distinct neighborhoods, each with its own flavor. You can build an itinerary centered around architecture, the arts, sports, or dining and still find days' worth of things to do.

If you're flying into Dallas, your major airport options are DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport. A free trolley and free D-Link bus can take you around downtown, but you'll want a car to really take in all that Dallas has to offer. You should also keep in mind that even a short hop between destinations can take hours by bus, with a portion of that time spent baking in the Texas sun.

Dallas has a full calendar of special events and festivals that take place throughout the year. If you want to attend one of these, make your reservations early to secure a spot. If you're not interested in the festival scene, however, you should actively avoid these special events to enjoy lower rates and smaller crowds. In February, over 10,000 people flock to Dallas to celebrate Mardi Gras Texas style. The USA Film Festival takes place in late April, the CityArts Festival happens in late May, and the Great American Trucking Show occurs in late September.

The State Fair of Texas is another major attraction in Dallas. This lasts from the end of September to mid-October and features around 200 food stands, 7,000 creative arts entries, and 8,000 livestock competitors in a celebration that's as big as Texas's personality.
